Oskar Escobedo operated two complementary businesses out of El Paso, Texas: Elevate Tax & Accounting for compliance and bookkeeping, and Elev8 CFO for fractional CFO and advisory work. For years, each month followed the same brutal rhythm — exporting trial balances, cleaning data, formatting financials, generating PDFs, emailing each client individually. The monthly close stretched to 18 days. Two-thirds of every month was spent producing financial statements instead of helping clients understand them.
"Before, I was a bookkeeping factory," he says. The operational burden also limited growth. Every new bookkeeping client meant more production work. Scaling appeared to require hiring staff — an approach he wanted to avoid.
The turning point came when he adopted Digits, an AI-native accounting platform. What he was looking for wasn't just another software tool, he says, but infrastructure he could build on. After year-end close, he migrated 27 clients — including historical balances, chart of accounts, payroll connections, and banking feeds — in roughly 40 hours. He estimates the same migration would have taken twice as long using traditional methods.
The first full month-end close after migration told the story. Close time dropped from 18 days to five. Monthly bookkeeping work fell from approximately 108 hours to about 20. Nearly 90 hours were reclaimed every month. Twenty-seven clients now receive automated monthly reporting, and 10 have transitioned to self-service dashboard access.
"I went from 18 days to five. That speaks for itself," Escobedo says. He redirected that recovered time toward growing the firm: a new website, SEO, LinkedIn presence, additional advisory services, and a stronger client acquisition strategy.
His view of the profession has shifted fundamentally. Routine bookkeeping, he believes, will increasingly become automated. The accountant's role moves upstream — toward analysis, planning, and strategic decision-making. "I'm on a mission to educate clients on what that data means," he says. "It's about empowering my clients to become better business owners."
